Carving stone is hard and can endure weathering. Therefore, in Lingnan buildings, it is not only used in tower, bridge, Shifang, pavilion, and tombstone, but also widely used in structural element and decorations. Carving can be divided mainly into three categories: firstly, structural element (door frame, panel, gate pillow stone, stairs, column base, Liang Fang, walling crib, etc.); secondly, building appendages (monument, stone lion, stone table, stone statue, etc.); lastly, building decoration (stone censer, Dawei stone, etc.).
In recent years, as the development of people's material and culture living standards and the continual change of aesthetic standard, carving stones are used wider and wider. It has large quantity and rich varieties. It is one of the maximum categories of natural stones and one of the main categories in irregular stone products. Compared with other stone products, it needs a higher processing skill. It is a perfect combination and reflection of art. Recently, batch processing stones have above 100 kinds, including huge ones which need lifting equipment to install, and decoration stone which can put on hand, float in water, wear on neck and on wrist. For these different kinds of carving stones, there still is no scientific classification in China yet. However, according to the recent development and traditional practice, we can classify carving stones in these 4 categories.
I、Classify by Usage
1. Appreciating, wearing and collecting decoration stone carvings, such as jade decorations, watching stones, and furnishing parts. They are small in size.
2. Grotto and cliff stone, such as Dunhuang Grottos, Yungang Grottos, and Longmen Grottos.
3. Cemetery stone carving, such as mausoleum statue, sarcophagus, and sacrifice, etc.
4. Palace, mansion and garden stone carving, for example, there are many classical carving stones in Palace Museum in Beijing, Summer Palace, and Chengde Mountain Resort.
5. Temple and altar stone carvings, for example columns and shrines in Beijing Palaces and in Shandong Confucius Temple are all stone carving products.
6. Stone bridge and statue, such as person sculpture in Hebei Zhaozhou Bridge and stone lions in Beijing Lugou Bridge, etc.
7. Shique and memorial arch, such as the memorial arch in Confucius Temple.
8. Tower statue, such as all kinds of stone towers.
9. Monument, such as all kinds of memorials and tomb, etc.
10. Person and animal sculptures, such as famous persons sculpture, Buddha statue and lion statue, etc.
11. Life crafts and supplies. For example, table, chair, tea table, lanterns and ink stones, etc.
12. Modern urban landscape and memorial statues, such as huge city statue, landscape statue and memorial statue, etc.
II. Classify by Shape
1. Solid statue, including person sculpture, animal sculpture, fireplace and column head, etc.
2. Plane statue, including rilievo, frame, window, board, picture, shadow carving and line carving, etc.
